101 Reasons Why I Heart Edmonton by Emil TiedermannNew book features Janice and other area authors as one of the reasons to “heart” Edmonton
It was an absolute thrill to see the Randy Craig mystery novel Sticks + Stones highlighted in a beautiful new coffee-table book entitled 101 Reasons Why I Heart Edmonton. Author Emil Tiedermann lists “The Writers” as Reason #26 why Alberta’s Capital City is so wonderful, and Janice’s book is featured as part of a glorious three-page spread that provides a long, rather incredible list of the many acclaimed authors who have ties to our hometown. The book should be in Edmonton-area stores soon, but in the meantime you can get more information (or perhaps order a copy) at Emil’s website.

Janice MacDonald with long-time friend W.P. Kinsella in 2015Janice remembers her long-time friend, W.P. Kinsella (1935-2016)
“Bill Kinsella was a great friend to a lot of writers, and I was always proud to be one of them. He graced Sticks + Stones with a great blurb, was always supportive and befriended my husband Randy automatically as part of his tribe.

“Bill showed us all what we all then knew instinctively to be true — that baseball was magical, that magic could happen on the page, and that Canadian writers from way out west had what it took to break through internationally.

“He made us laugh, he made us cry, he gave us a field of dreams.

“I can see him up on some cloud, saying to St. Peter, ‘Is this Iowa?’ and Peter saying, ‘No Bill, this is Heaven.'”

Sticks + Stones gets a shout-out from the Chronicle of Higher Education
Now THIS is an honest-to-god thrill — the Chronicle of Higher Education has unveiled its annual list of “Academic Novels for Real People” by Ms. Mentor, and Sticks + Stones: A Randy Craig Mystery has been included! A few years back, Hang Down Your Head was highlighted in the Journal of the Canadian Society for Traditional Music and Condemned to Repeat got a nice write-up by Edmonton’s Historian Laureate (these older write-ups appear on the Press/Bio page of this website). It’s always a bit of a geeky head-rush when the series is recognized for its academic foundations and for the extensive research that goes into evoking Randy Craig’s many adventures (and misadventures) in academe and throughout Edmonton’s cultural scene. Now, I don’t know about you but I want to check out some of the other books on the Chronicle‘s list, which you can read here.

JustWrite 2016Join Janice for a mystery workshop at the YouthWrite 2016 writing camp for adults
Randy Craig Mystery series creator Janice MacDonald will be one of the teachers at this year’s edition of JustWrite — an Edmonton writing camp for adults to be held July 1-3 at the Bennett Centre in Edmonton’s river valley. Janice’s workshop will guide you through the steps of creating a unique sleuth and crafting a mysterious plot. According to Janice, “Creating a believable character to inhabit a formulaic structure can be problematic. Formulas mean just that, there are rules and recipes to follow. However, in order to be unique, interesting and human, your detective needs to bridge the gap between the recipe and the real. Come try your hand at mixing together the ingredients to create your own fictional hero, suspenseful writing, and learn the general rules for the genre of mystery fiction along the way.” There are still spaces available to join Janice and her fellow instructors Mark Kozub, Barbara North, and Randy Williams. Get the full details and registration information at the JustWrite website.

Janice MacDonald book signing for Another MargaretRecapping a Brilliant 2015!
What a wonderful year it has been! Not only did a new novel, Another Margaret, bring the entire Randy Craig Mystery series full circle, but there were opportunities to splash out with other kinds of writing as well. The 49th Shelf website for Canadian readers ran a new blog post entitled “Janice MacDonald Goes Back to School in Fiction” that earned a great response and a lot of very positive feedback, as did an original piece for the Criminal Element mystery blog, “You’ve Come a Relatively Middling Distance, Baby”: Signs of Shift in Female Fictional Detectives.

It seems that 2015 was my big year to publish a variety of shorter pieces! The July 2015 issue of Avenue Magazine ran a new short story entitled “The Window Seat” in their first-ever summer fiction issue. A short story called “The Workman’s Friend” appeared in AB Negative: An Anthology of Alberta Crime, and a work of creative non-fiction entitled “The Cold War” was featured in 40 Below Volume 2: Alberta’s Winter Anthology. As if that weren’t enough fun for one 12-month block, the inaugural issue of Sleuth Magazine ran an interview about my mystery work alongside new stories from a rogue’s gallery of well-known Canadian crime writers.

All in all, this has been a great time to be a writer! Next year is all about finishing the current project, a super-secret book-length work of creative non-fiction. After that, who knows what lies ahead? In the meantime, thanks to each and every one of you for your ongoing support. Have a very merry Christmas (or whichever joyous winter holiday you observe) and I will see you again in 2016. Ho ho ho!

Writer Kerry Clare discovered the Randy Craig Mystery series after reading Janice’s September 2015 guest post for The 49th Shelf, “Janice MacDonald Goes Back to School in Fiction” — and she has now written a lovely review of Another Margaret: A Randy Craig Mystery. According to Clare, the “whole project is done in the spirit of fun, not taking itself too seriously, but executed well enough that admirers of academic mysteries can come along for the ride. And I really glad I did. Another Margaret was a great introduction to the Randy Craig series.” And in other good news, the book has been back on the Edmonton Journal Bestseller list for the past two weeks. With just two weeks left till Christmas, don’t forget that books are super-easy to wrap, and they can even fit right inside the stockings of all the mystery lovers on your list (whether naughty or nice!).

As guests arrived, they received “homecoming” nametags and were asked to pose in a cap and gown “for the yearbook.” When everyone helped themselves to coffee, cake and wine after they reading, the guests were also treated to a hilarious slideshow of mock yearbook pages, which used the photos that had been snapped as they arrived. Check out all the highlights at the Launch Party Photo Album. Another Margaret: A Randy Craig Mystery by Janice MacDonaldAnnouncing the September 23 release of Another Margaret: A Randy Craig Mystery
A brand-new 2015 release, Another Margaret brings Janice MacDonald’s Randy Craig series full circle by tying a Canadian Literature mystery from Randy’s grad-school days to deadly present-day events during the lead-up to her 20-year reunion. Anxiety is the watchword at most school reunions, with side-eye comparisons of greying hair and extra pounds around the belly. Not our Randy Craig — she’s more concerned with resolving a decades-old CanLit scandal and catching a ruthless killer. While helping her best friend Denise organize their grad-school reunion at the University of Alberta, Randy’s tumultuous past comes rushing into the present as she faces off against old ghosts and imminent death. “This is going to be the yummiest reunion. It’s as if we all went to grad school with Jessica Fletcher!”

Another Margaret is the eagerly awaited follow-up to three recent best-sellers by MacDonald — 2014’s The Roar of the Crowd, 2013’s Condemned to Repeat, and 2011’s Hang Down Your Head. The new book incorporates the events of the “lost” Randy Craig Mystery, 1994’s The Next Margaret, and expands them into a masterful novel that covers two decades in the lives of Miranda “Randy” Craig and her supporting cast of characters. Another Margaret will have its official launch party at Audreys Books, located at 10702 Jasper Avenue in Edmonton, on Wednesday, September 23 beginning at 7:00 PM. For more details about the launch party, please visit the Facebook Event Page.

Stay tuned for more promo events to celebrate the new novel, including author appearances at the University of Alberta during this fall’s homecoming. In the meantime, you can get more information about Another Margaret — including advance praise from Angie Abdou, Linda Wiken, and Caterina Edwards — by visiting our spiffy new book page.

Buzz begins to build for the autumn release of Another Margaret: A Randy Craig Mystery!
Bob Armstrong of The Winnipeg Free Press writes: “In the movies, they’d call something like this a reboot. Edmonton mystery writer Janice MacDonald has revisited and rewritten the first of her novels featuring crime-solving academic Randy Craig. Instead of just reprinting the novel, published in 1993 with the title The Next Margaret and now out of print, MacDonald decided to use the plot elements for a new novel. The new book, titled Another Margaret, is due in the fall from Ravenstone, the mystery and fantasy imprint of Winnipeg’s Turnstone Press.” Read Bob’s full column here.

NEWS FLASH! The New Randy Craig Mystery, Another Margaret, arrives Fall 2015
Back in 1993, Janice MacDonald’s first Randy Craig mystery, The Next Margaret was published, went quickly out of print, and become a bit of a “cult” collector’s item. Now, after five best-selling installments in the series with Winnipeg’s Ravenstone Books/Turnstone Press, Randy’s very first adventures will again be available to crime fiction fans. However, instead of simply reprinting the original book, author Janice MacDonald has taken the plot elements from that story and integrated them into an entirely new novel, Another Margaret. “I hope that those Randy Craig fans who read the long-gone original will enjoy the revisiting and reimagining,” said MacDonald. “And for those who are encountering Randy’s early academic life for the first time, I hope that this look to the past will deepen her back story for readers.”

The sixth installment in the “offical canon” of the Randy Craig mystery series, Another Margaret finds our intrepid amateur sleuth helping her best friend Denise organize their 20-year reunion at the University of Alberta. In the midst of a great flurry of planning and promotion, Randy’s tumultuous past as a graduate student comes rushing into the present as she faces off against old ghosts and imminent death. Set to coincide with the 100th year anniversary of the University of Alberta’s Alumni Association, Another Margaret will give mystery lovers and U of A alums plenty to celebrate in Edmonton come the fall. Watch this site for more news, coming soon! In the meantime, you can get more information from the publisher here.

Janice and her Randy Craig Mystery series kick off the new year in style with exciting news, a great review, and an author reading from inside a giant igloo!
allbooksHappy New Year, mystery lovers! Sorry to have been away so long, but we return with exciting news — a first draft of the next Randy Craig Mystery novel was finished on Christmas Day! Stay tuned for more details to come. Almost as thrilling, we kicked off 2015 for the series with a great review from the Winnipeg Free Press, which calls The Roar of the Crowd “a terrific little mystery” (see the full review here). Finally, for a bit of January fun, Janice gave the world-premiere reading of a new (non-mystery) story entitled “The Cold War” on Saturday, January 10, from a stage inside a giant inflatable igloo! The reading, part of the 2015 Deep Freeze Festival, was organized by Jason Lee Norman, the editor/creator of the bestselling 2013 release, 40 Below: Edmonton’s Winter Anthology. Janice’s story, and many other great pieces by writers from across Alberta, will appear in volume two of the anthology, coming this November from Wufniks Press. And yes, there are photos of Janice in the enormous igloo here.
