Ho ho ho — Condemned to Repeat is back on top of the Bestseller list!
Condemned to Repeat is #1 on the Edmonton Journal Bestseller list for Christmas week, as published in the print edition for Friday, December 20. It’s wonderful to see so many fellow Edmonton authors on the list — congrats, Lynn Coady, Todd Babiak, Diana Davidson, Cassie Stocks, and Jason Lee Norman! I am truly grateful for support from local readers, from the terrific team at Audreys Books, and from lovely people like Wayne Arthurson, Laurie Greenwood, Michael Hingston, Portia Clark, Jessica Kluthe, Matthew Stepanic, Linda Wiken, Lou Allin, and Ian Goodwillie of The Winnipeg Review, all of whom provided coverage or little shout-outs to my books throughout the year. We’re gearing up to do it again in 2014 with The Roar of the Crowd — a Randy Craig Mystery set in and around Edmonton’s theatre scene, including the Freewill Shakespeare Festival and the Fringe. In the meantime, please accept my best wishes for a safe, happy holiday season and a new year full of love and light! (P.S. You can check out the entire Bestseller list here.)

Janice and her series have a great week — a successful holiday book-signing event and a wonderful, out of the blue review!
Janice signed and personalized copies of her Randy Craig Mystery novels at Edmonton’s Audreys Books on December 12, where she met some lovely readers and managed to clean the place out of every copy of every book in the series! That’s good news for the lucky crowd who made it out to get fabulous Christmas gifts, bad news for anyone who missed out. Never fear, we’re sure more copies will be in stock soon. Elsewhere, in an unexpected (and wonderful!) development, Matthew Stepanic (editor of Glass Buffalo magazine) posted a great review of Sticks and Stones as part of his participation in Bookstravaganza 2013. According to Matthew, it’s “one of those books that begs to be finished at 3 a.m. of the same day.” You can read his full review here.

Pure fun at Pure Spec 2013, Condemned to Repeat back on the charts
Not even an epic dump of snow could keep the geeky faithful away from the 2013 Pure Speculation Conference in Edmonton, held November 16-17. The event was a huge success, with two days of wonderful panels and readings as well as the first-ever Edmonton Steampunk Ball. Janice moderated a lively panel on “The Many Faces of Sherlock Holmes” and enjoyed the chance to pal around with other local and visiting authors. Perhaps given a bump by Janice’s con appearance, Condemned to Repeat was back up at #4 on the Edmonton JournalBestseller list the following Friday — marking its 19th week on the chart. A gallery of photos from Pure Spec (including the Holmes panel) is available here, and the full Edmonton JournalBestseller charts for November 22, 2013, can be found here.

Condemned to Repeat reviewed by author Lou Allin
Lou Allin — author of the Belle Palmer series set in Sudbury, Northern Ontario, and the Holly Martin series set on Vancouver Island — has posted a warmly positive review of Condemned to Repeat at Goodreads under the title “Edmonton’s Literary Ambassador.” Allin writes, “Randy Craig shepherds the reader through many of the highlights of this complex city, its history short but rich. This book walks a delicate tightrope between fact and fiction, not an easy feat. Locals love the series, and those who know little about the great province of Alberta have a treat in store.” Please read the full review here.

Momentous day with stellar reading event and first draft of a new mystery all wrapped up!
Sunday, November 3 was an excellent day in Edmonton, despite the overnight dump of snow. Janice participated in a great “themed reading,” along with fellow authors Candas Jane Dorsey (Black Wine) and Bonnie Randall (Divinity and the Python). The reading was organized by the Edmonton boosters at #YEGwrites and hosted by the wonderful team at Audreys Books. A hearty crowd braved the weather and responded with gusto to the readings, the Q&A — and to the hot coffee and cream puffs afterward! As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, Janice also completed the first draft of the next Randy Craig novel. Tentatively titled The Roar of the Crowd, the mystery is set in and around Edmonton’s theatre scene and festivals. You should have it in your hot little hands by mid-2014!

Fabulous reader feedback from contest winner Pat Russell!
We’ve received some wonderful reader feedback from contest winner Pat Russell, who scored a copy of Condemned to Repeat in our late-summer Mystery Scavenger Hunt. The last we heard from Pat, her book had arrived in the post just as she was in the middle of a major move. Then, over the past weekend, we got a lovely update!
“I saved the book I won, Condemned to Repeat, as the first book to read after I moved. Arrived at the new apartment Monday, finished the book on Wednesday… still have to unpack though! I’d never read a Janice MacDonald book before and I loved it. Must look for her other stories now. That was the best contest I’ve ever entered and one of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time. I liked the book because I could let my mother borrow it, if I knew she would return it. (She has a habit of borrowing books and then donating them to the church fall sale!) It was informative, the deaths were not horribly graphic, and the story flowed so well that I hated to put it down to go to sleep.”
Thanks for the kind note, Pat, and we’re so happy to hear that you enjoyed the book!

Randy Craig Mysteries still riding high on the Bestseller list!

Even more impressive is the sheer number (and wide range) of talented Edmonton writers featured on both the fiction and non-fiction charts this week. Big cheers to two fellow Edmonton women at the top of their games — Diana Davidson (#1 fiction) and Jessica Kluthe (#1 non-fiction) — and to Audrey Whitson, Todd Babiak, Michael Hingston, Lynn Coady and Ryan Cormier for the success of their books. Condemned to Repeat reviewed at Mystery Maven Canada
Linda Wiken has posted a wonderful review of Condemned to Repeat at her popular crime-fiction blog, Mystery Maven Canada. According to Linda, “One of the things I like best about Janice MacDonald’s Randy Craig mystery series (besides the fact that she’s a darned good writer) is how much the series is about Edmonton. [Condemned to Repeat] is truly a Canadian mystery, and it’s also a riveting tale that will appeal to a wide spectrum of readers.” (P.S. — Linda herself also writes a great series of “cozy” mysteries — the Ashton Corners Book Club mysteries, which are published under the pen name Erika Chase. The third of these, Cover Story, has just been released by Berkley Prime Crime.) You can read the full Mystery Maven Canada review of Condemned to Repeat here.

Happy 2013 — are you ready for a new Randy Craig mystery novel?
Happy New Year! 2012 was a wonderful rollercoaster ride, with Hang Down Your Headcontinuing to sell very well (and going into a second printing), garnering some great reviews, and attracting media attention to the entire series. As a result, Sticks and Stones also went into a second printing. Now if we could just get the word out to mystery fans about how deliciously scary The Monitor is — and get The Next Margaret back into print — awareness of the books as an ongoing series would be complete. The very best news about 2013 is that we will keep the momentum going with an all-new new Randy Craig mystery, coming this spring, that will do for Edmonton’s historical sites what Hang Down Your Head did for the folk festival! Stay tuned for more details in the near future!
